This is the single greatest martial arts teaching DVD I have ever seen. It's Yang style Tai Chi Chuan. The images, extensive and detailed explanations and general quality of it are way above most instructional media. The demonstrator (who is the head of the biggest Tai Chi tradition in the West) is shown from all sides, and details such as the transfer of weight, direction of toes and any changes during the movement are given as he moves. Breathing is concentrated on at all times, and the reasons WHY are always explained. These may all sound essential, but you'd be surprised how videos don't do this properly. Being a bit familiar with some of it, I can't see anything that you'd get in a public class that isn't already on here. That's not the best bit though. It's four hours long, which is excellent value for money, and has the entire Yang style long form as well as the basic stances etc separately, but the best bit is actually the extras. For example, I didn't expect him to explain Tai Chi theory using frickin' Ohm's Law and then P = I(squared) x R (GCSE Physics, how I don't miss thee). And it makes perfect sense. He even goes into the Tao Te Ching, where Tajiquan falls between Tao and Yin/Yang, and lots of other stuff that make sad Taoism geeks like me get all excited. Absolutely perfect for beginners and intermediates. His movements and stances are excellent, the instructions and explanations are detailed enough, it's just very impressive. So, if you don't have time for the gym but fancy exercising in front of the tv a couple of times a week, get stuck in. Good luck on the low stances, his horse stance alone was low enough to have me in pain... Tags: dude, geek, hopeless idealist, philosophy

Has anyone read Stephen Hunt's The Court of the Air? I'm halfway through it and was finding it pleasingly inventive and bleak (pretty much what I wanted His Dark Materials to be, really) when suddenly there was a fight scene. This guy writes fighting like I do! like I wish I ever could! Not only are all my favourite elements in there, this is the first author in ages who really gets magically-assisted physical combat. The rage of it, the conviction needed to power the dual energy for form and magical power. He gets the euphoria of mixing the two, and the speed, and lots of other things I tried to put in some hastily-written fic about five years ago. Very impressed, and starting to add this book to the "made just for meee!" list. Did it get a good reception when it came out? I'm sure one of you will have reviewed it on here in the past, but I didn't have an image to link it to at the time. Tags: books, geek, myth
